How to Calculate MAPE

Formula used:

MAPE =
1
n
Σ |
Ai - Pi
Ai
|  × 100

Where,

  • n = Total number of observations
  • Ai = Actual value
  • Pi = Predicted or forecasted value

Example:

Calculate the MAPE for:

  • Actual values = 120, 140, 70, 200
  • Predicted values = 90, 126, 49, 210

First, find the absolute percentage error for each data value:

  1. | (120 - 90) ÷ 120 | × 100 = 25%
  2. | (140 - 126) ÷ 140 | × 100 = 10%
  3. | (70 - 49) ÷ 70 | × 100 = 30%
  4. | (200 - 210) ÷ 200 | × 100 = 5%

Now find the average of the percentage errors:

MAPE = (25 + 10 + 30 + 5) ÷ 4 = 17.5%
