How to Calculate Percent Yield

The following formulas are used:

Percent Yield = (Actual Yield ÷ Theoretical Yield) × 100

Actual Yield = (Percent Yield ÷ 100) × Theoretical Yield

Theoretical Yield = Actual Yield ÷ (Percent Yield ÷ 100)

Example 1:

Find the percent yield for:

  • Actual Yield = 5.11 g
  • Theoretical Yield = 7.3 g

Apply the values in the formula:

= (5.11 ÷ 7.3) × 100

= 0.7 × 100

= 70%

Example 2:

Find the actual yield for:

  • Theoretical Yield = 8.6 g
  • Percent Yield = 54%

= (54 ÷ 100) × 8.6

= 0.54 × 8.6

= 4.644 g

Example 3:

Find the theoretical yield for:

  • Actual Yield = 120 g
  • Percent Yield = 80%

= 120 ÷ (80 ÷ 100)

= 120 ÷ 0.8

= 150 g
