How to Calculate Percentage Increase

The following formula is used:

Percentage Increase = (Final Value - Starting Value) ÷ Starting Value × 100

Example 1:

Find the percent increase from $750 to $900.

Apply the values in the formula:

= (900 - 750) ÷ 750 × 100

= (150 ÷ 750) × 100

= 0.2 × 100

= 20%

Example 2:

An employee's annual salary increased from $60,000 to $77,000.

= (77,000 - 60,000) ÷ 60,000 × 100

= (17,000 ÷ 60,000) × 100

= 0.2833 × 100

= 28.33%

Example 3:

The town's population grew from 21,000 to 30,270.

= (30,270 - 21,000) ÷ 21,000 × 100

= (9,270 ÷ 21,000) × 100

= 0.4414 × 100

= 44.14%
