How to Calculate Goods and Services Tax (GST)

The following formulas are used:

Net Price = Gross Price ÷ (1 + GST Rate ÷ 100)

GST Amount = Net Price × (GST Rate ÷ 100)

Gross Price = Net Price × (1 + GST Rate ÷ 100)

Example 1:

Add GST for:

  • Net Price = $1,700
  • GST Rate = 10%

Apply the values in the formula:

GST = 1,700 × (10 ÷ 100)

= 1,700 × 0.1

= $170

Gross price = $1,700 + $170 = $1,870

Example 2:

Remove GST from:

  • Gross Price = $2,645
  • GST Rate = 15%

Net price = 2,645 ÷ (1 + 15 ÷ 100)

= 2,645 ÷ 1.15

= $2,300

GST = 2,645 - 2,300 = $345
