How to Calculate Percent Error

The following formula is used:

Percent Error = |Observed - True| ÷ True × 100

Example 1:

The true weight of a package is 15 kg, but the observed weight is 14.6 kg. Find the percent error.

Apply the values in the formula:

= |14.6 - 15| ÷ 15 × 100

= |-0.4| ÷ 15 × 100

= 0.0266 × 100

= 2.67%

Example 2:

The true length of a steel rod is 232 cm, while the observed length is 250 cm.

= |250 - 232| ÷ 232 × 100

= |18| ÷ 232 × 100

= 0.07758 × 100

= 7.76%
