Percentage Calculations

Our calculator can perform the following calculations. Let's understand each with formulas and example problems.

1. What is X% of Y?

Formula:

Value = (X ÷ 100) × Y

Example:

What is 23% of 255?

= (23 ÷ 100) × 255

= 0.23 × 255

= 58.65

2. X is what percent of Y?

Formula:

Percentage = (X ÷ Y) × 100

Example:

50 is what percent of 320?

= (50 ÷ 320) × 100

= 0.15625 × 100

= 15.625%

3. X is Y% of what?

Formula:

Whole = X ÷ (Y ÷ 100)

Example:

170 is 25% of what?

= 170 ÷ (25 ÷ 100)

= 170 ÷ 0.25

= 680

4. What is the percentage change from X to Y?

Formula:

Percentage Change = ((Y - X) ÷ X) × 100

Example 1 (Increase):

Find the percent increase from 300 to 370.

= ((370 - 300) ÷ 300) × 100

= (70 ÷ 300) × 100

= 0.2333 × 100

= 23.33% (Increase)

Example 2 (Decrease):

Find the percent decrease from 800 to 660.

= ((660 - 800) ÷ 800) × 100

= (-140 ÷ 800) × 100

= -0.175 × 100

= -17.5% (Decrease)
